"From November 11th to 14th, 1917 this private was with A Company occupying a shell hole position in the front line. The only means of communication was by verbal message and throughout, this private distinguished himself alike by his courage and judgement in keeping up communications, time and time again passing through an area over which an incessant artillery and machine gun barrage was maintained. During the afternoon of November 13th, 1917 when the enemy threatened an attack and their artillery and gas bombardment was at its worst, this runner again volunteered to take messages when others had become casualties, and successfully delivered despatches of the utmost value to Headquarters" (52nd Bn War Diary, December 1917, Appendix 7).

"On November 12th, 1917 during the 52nd Canadian Infantry Battalion's last tour in the trenches on PASSCHENDAELE RIDGE when consolidating the line after the attack of the 1st Canadian Division, this man displayed great gallantry in dressing and succouring the wounded under the heaviest of shell fire. During the Battalion's three days in the line it was subjected to a number of heavy bombardments. During all these, this stretcherbearer moved about our positions, regardless of his own personal safety, giving valuable aid to the wounded, whilst during the hostile attack November 13th, 1917, he freely exposed himself in order to bring in wounded without delay. This man also did galland work during our attack on October 28th, 1917. He has previously been twice recommended at the Somme and Lens for similar conduct, but has received no previous award" (52nd Bn War Diary, December 1917, Appendix 7).

"He took part in the raid by 3 Officers and 22 O.R.s against Neuville Vitasse, and showed great pluck and initiative. The enemy vacated their front line posts, thus rendering the original objective of the raid valueless. Pte Darby volunteered to follow in to their second line to obtain the needed identification. With an officer and six others he went several hundred yards into the enemy lines over unknown ground to a point where they lay in ambush at the junction of the main road and a communication trench. After waiting three quarters of an hour, a hostile party appeared. Private Darby worked round in rear to prevent their escape whilst the remainder engaged them and secured the needed identification. During the withdrawal he again displayed courage and resource in taking out a wounded comrade under heavy rifle and machine gun fire" (52nd Bn War Diary, August 1918, page 15).

"During the bombardment of Virtue Farm November 13th, 1917 prior to a hostile attack, this private had charge of a Lewis Gun. The line was heavily shelled and trice the shell-hole from which he was working was hit, burying himself and gun and causing casualties. "On October 26th, 1917 this Battalion Runner accompanied his Commanding Officer in the attack upon Bellevue Spur and throughout showed great daring and courage. After the whole objective had been attained he accompanied another officer back through and intense barrage to Headquarters with despatches giving the report and then volunteered to take orders to another company who were being advanced up to support. Accomplishing this, upon his own initiative he again left Headquarters and returned through the barrage to rejoin his O.C. "This N.C.O. commanded a platoon during the attack upon Bellevue Spur October 26th, 1917. He handled his men with great courage ans skill, taking charge of the consolidation of the left flank, and handling it during the enemy counter-attack, which largely owing to the skillful placing of machine guns was completely broken up. During the night he was visiting his outposts when three enemy scouts were observed. He immediately went out with two O.R.s, killed one and captured two. He then noticed a strong enemy patrol of one officer and ten O.R.s of the enemy with a light machine gun. This patrol was also captured by Sgt Girden and his party. His platoon officer being wounded, he took charge of his platoon and directed the consolidation and saw that his men were dug in in such a manner as to save a large number of lives during the enemy bombardments which followed the capture of the Spur. "Was one of three survivors of a platoon that held the line when the first attack on Bellevue Spur had failed, October 26th, 1917. When the second attack commenced this private with two others and their N.C.O. advanced against an enemy pill box which had caused us heavy casualties in first attack. They worked up to the rear of the pill box all the time using their rifles to such advantage as to cause heavy casualties to the enemy, and when they saw an opportunity they rushed the pill box from the rear taking with it a large number of prisoners, wounded and unwounded, and four machine guns" (52nd Bn War Diary, November 1917, Appendix 6).

He at once dug his gun out and got it into position ahead of his original location, doing magnificant work with it. When the attack was over he at once organised a party to collect wounded, and when those of his own battalion were clear, he carried in several for the Imperial Battalion on the left flank. Later on when his company attacked, he accompanied them and throughout the day tended wounded although exposed to heavy fire, and being the only stretcher bearer left, still refused to go out and have his own wounds attended to. Later when the enemy put down a heavy barrage and attempted a counterattack, he handled his gun, whilst under heavy fire, with great courage and skill, causing the enemy heavy casualties and materially assisted in his coplete defeat. "When BELLEVUE SPUR was captured, this signaler volunteered to maintain communication between the crest of the hill and WATERLOO. The heavy shelling constantly breaking the line he laid, he made seven trips between these two points with important despatches in each case being under heavy rifle and machine gun fire as well as passing through the hostile barrage. "Was one of three survivors of a platoon that held the line when the first attack upon Bellevue Spur had failed, October 26th, 1917. When the second attack commenced this private and two others and their N.C.O. advanced in a most gallant fashion against the enemy "pill box" which had caused such heavy casualties early in the day. Pte. Patvin's initiative as a scout was invaluable to the party, which worked around until they flanked the pillbox and finally got behind it, all the time using their rifles to such advantage that the enemy suffered heavy casualties, and when they saw the opportunity, this party of four rushed the pill box, taking a large number of unwounded as well as wounded prisoners together with four machine guns" (52nd Bn War Diary, November 1917, Appendix 6).

In the course of the action all the gun crew with the exception of the No.1 and himself became casualties, but he continued to feed the gun until it was put temporarily out of action through being buried. At great risk he crossed a shell-stricken area to obtain necessities to get the gun in working order, and afterwards made another trip to obtain assistance. It was only by this man's unselfish devotion to duty that his gun was ready to operate against troops massing for a counter attack.
